  1. We started off strong but then did some babysitting to help out another mom and it is all thrown off. Also one of my kids is having some issues which throw a wrench in some days. I'm hoping next week we can get back into a better routine but then my husband will be off for a week. We will have most of october to establish a great routine then my busy season with OCC will start in November. Sigh guess that's life
  2. Personally I'd do more dissection but obviously the kids don't want that..... what about looking at slides of cells, candling eggs, have kids write a report to bring back each class on an animal of their choice from that week's classification.....make an insect collection. I don't know, I don't think I'm much help. Good luck!
  3. I'd love to know what sort of planners you all use. I currently use the Apologia planner which is great but I'm needing a bit different. My main thing is it has room for all of my "to dos" and a brief spot for the kids OR I could set it up with spots for the kids but squeeze in the personal stuff.....either way isn't working great. I don't do a lot of pre-planning our homeschool lessons but I like to keep track of what we do each day as sort of a running list or journal for each kid. I'm thinking I'm going to end up having to use two planners, one specifically for homeschool and one for everything else. I could pull forms from the Schoolhouse Teachers planners which I have access to already, for frugality that's what I probably SHOULD do. I toyed with the idea of just getting two Apologia planners but that gets a bit pricey.....Anyway, thoughts? What do you use?
  4. We started a couple weeks ago but not all of our curriculum was in so it was a gradual start. The last of it came in yesterday so Tuesday will be the first day of doing all subjects.
  5. My kids clean their own rooms and have one other room assigned to them to keep clean (ages 13, 9 and 7) including vacuuming or sweeping and mopping. My oldest does dishes, my 9 year old takes out trash, and they all help feed and care for animals (chickens, rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs....).
  6. I put one together using the flexible 5-star binder. It is working out pretty well.
  7. We have decided that this year we will get more active and intentional about 4H so that will be our primary activity. We also do baton, tae kwan do, and AWANA so at this point I think that is enough
  8. Yeah online planners don't work for me either. Too easy to ignore it and "out of sight out of mind!" I'm still working on mine but I've just printed my own pages.
  9. Thanks for letting us know Julie, glad things are ok and hope the forum picks up as well!
  10. I'm wondering if everything is ok too, seems like they are at a standstill somehow....and have vanished from here all together. We love the audios so I hope things are ok with the company and everyone there.
  11. That sounds fun but I don't know any resources like you are describing. What about dissecting things? There are some homeschool science supply companies you can get things to dissect from. Not sure what your budget is. I also like the idea of bringing in different things. Maybe some bird watching stuff have them write/sketch the birds they see and identify them, you could do this with other animals too....
  12. I'm glad you posted I saw the news and was praying all was ok with you!
  13. Oh that reminds me I need to hit the back to school sales for OCC boxes. Husband has been gone the last week+ and I'm not up for taking all the kids so as soon as he gets back I need to figure out what is on sale and stock up!
  14. I beg to differ that our involvement in the world wars was not necessary. Especially WWII, you think we should have allowed Hitler to continue exterminating the Jews and take over Europe? If anything we should have gotten involved much sooner and ended it all so as to preserve lives, those in concentration camps as well as the soldiers of other countries. More recent wars are certainly more questionable (although I will say, my husband was in Iraq when Hussain was captured, at that time he definitely believed in what we were doing over there, however, the mess we left is not much better). I'm not sure you have a good understanding of these wars but regardless at least you feel there is someone to honor.
  15. That is quite an organized VBS tracking system I'm sure the other moms appreciate your work on it too!
  16. Praying things are going well can't wait to hear about your trip when you return!
  17. I'll keep you in my prayers!
  18. Thank you, yes I skipped church Sunday just because I couldn't handle possible awkward comments or the whole "how are you" question that I don't feel like I can answer honestly but I guess I'll go tomorrow.
  19. I am having a miscarriage. We have 5 living children and I have four others in heaven. I'd appreciate prayers for quick physical healing and time to process, grieve, and heal emotionally. This was a surprise and in some ways the thought of a 6th was completely overwhelming and now I have guilt about those thoughts. This child would have been cherished regardless. With 5 here though it is not like I can just take some quiet time to process and heal. Luckily it started Friday when hubby was home from work and he has been home the last two days, hopefully the worst will be over by tomorrow when he goes back to work. Also, my oldest who is my big helper is gone to camp so it is just the younger 4 right now which will make taking it easy even harder. I'll survive but I definitely appreciate prayer. Oh also I didn't make an announcement yet so luckily not everyone knows but enough people know that I will likely get awkward questions for a while.
  20. That stinks that you had to shut it down but I think that is pretty common after issues like yours, unfortunately. Just remember God has a better plan
  21. We also generally have a loose routine in the summer, although this year the entire year has been a mess so now I'm just concentrating on getting things set up to do better in the fall. We haven't done VBS the last two summers, I love it for my kids but driving them to and from town every day is sort of a pain and then my younger ones get upset because they aren't old enough yet. Our church doesn't do one either and I never seem to find out about others until the middle of the week it is happening.
  22. Thank you for your prayers!
  23. That sounds like a fun experience! Glad he got to participate.
  24. Yes!!! Going places is a pain, actually for some reason getting home from places is the real pain, they jump out of the car and scatter and it is awful trying to get everyone where and doing what they are supposed to be doing lol. I braved the park last week. Of course, that means my 12-year-old gets assigned one kid and I watch the other. I hate assigning her to one but I can only chase one in one direction at a time. We don't often go to parks lol. I have a 3 and a 1 year old so I have a few years of this left. I regularly remind myself it is temporary.
  25. Hey y'all, wondering if anyone has any great childproofing hacks? I've got a child that outsmarts almost all childproofing. He is 3. He gets into the fridge and freezer, the cabinets. The cabinet locks I have aren't working but our cabinets are too thin to install the permanent latches. I have a gate into the kitchen but he can open it. He climbs. The biggest issue is him getting into the kitchen and/or running outside. He can also open and climb our gates outside and get out of the yard (we live in the country on an acre but the road in front of the house is busy and the cars drive fast so it isn't safe for him to be out of the fence. For now we can keep him in the house with the child-lock door knobs but if he is anything like his sister he will figure out how to get those off pretty soon. When we are outside playing or working I need to keep him in the fence. So anyway thought I'd see if any of you have any ideas I haven't thought of.
