How long do you SAY you've been homeschooling?

18 posts in this topic

This is a goofy question, but when people ask how long you've been homeschooling, what do you say? We've never sent our kids to school, so I just say, "From the beginning." If they ask for years, I don't know what to say. Our oldest is 20, so that's 17 years if her preschool started at three, or 15 years if her kindergarten started at 5, or 13 years if we go by her legal exemption age in our former state of Nevada. If we go by when we first started reading to her, that would be 21 years. :)

What do YOU say?

I have the same problem! We decided we would be homeschooling when my daughter was 2, I even bought curriculum (something I advise against now!) so I generally count from then. I personally believe you are always teaching your children (even if you don't want to!) so yeah....hard answer.

HA!  I was just going through this in my head yesterday when I was asked.  I ended up saying 9+1.5.  Nine with the current bunch of kids (I started by counting when the oldest of the littles started co-op at age 4), then I added 1.5 for the bigger who graduated several years before the littles came along.  I guess I will just say 9 for the rest of this year and stick with the littles because the way I homeschooled the bigger wasn't really what I know homeschooling to be now!

We have started homeschooling since my now senior was in kindergarten. Always said we wouldn't before that.

However, if we add up total years, then I add up the 13 I have homeschooled my oldest, 11 for my second, 10 for my 3rd, and 8 for my last--making it a grand total of 42 years! :)

I just say something like "from the beginning" or "My oldest is in 5th grade now, and we've always homeschooled" and that's usually enough to satisfy most people.  I guess in terms of years, I start counting from Pre-K on, because I intentionally left work to homeschool the summer my oldest was four.  Even though I don't do FORMAL lessons for a few more years, I do start making an intentional shift starting around that age.  Anything before that is just parenting, and I don't do anything different with my current 2 year old (except letting her tag along with the big kids) than I did with the oldest, who went to a private babysitter at 2 years old.

The same. Since my oldest was three; which is true.

I usually just say from the beginning. If I'm counting years, I start with when our oldest was 5 and we started Kindergarten, since that's what most other people think of as starting school. So this makes year 15.o.O

I say I have been homeschooling since my oldest homeschooled daughter was 2 1/2, doing home preschool and letter of the week. We called it Home Preschooling. She is now 10 1/2, so we have been homeschooling for 8 years. Wow!

We live in PA, so we didn't have to be "official" for the school district until she was 8. This is my 3rd year of having to file paperwork.

I start at preschool when I tell people. She is in 9th grade and we did two years of Kindergarten so this year I'm going in my 12th year! I feel that I earned that preschool year to count as my daughter has special needs and it's been an adventure since then with the specialists telling me I shouldn't homeschool her. SO I'll claim that year as it was a well earned one!

Pre-school is an important time and you should count this!    :)

I say "always."  There isn't a clear start for me.  But my oldest is 12 so I guess if we say at the start of Kindergarten that'd be 7 years.

I tell people we've always homeschooled. If they press for more info I would say I've been teaching them since they were born. Which, technically is true. :)

I say I have been homeschooling from the time my  oldest was born - isn't it what we do as mommas?

I think it is a lifestyle :-)

Exactly!  From the moment those precious little ones enter this world, we Mom's are always teaching and continue to do even when they leave the nest!  :)
